Wilno and its History

Wilno is known as the first Polish Settlement in Canada, dating back to 1886, and many people come to Wilno to experience first-hand what the Polish people and the Kasubian Polish people are like.  The Polish people in the are have tried to keep their roots alive and the Polish culture is very active in Wilno and Barry`s Bay.  The village of Wilno has a Polish festival on Polish Day, the first weekend(Saturday) in May.  There is local music, Kasubiuan costumes and dancing (always a good fiddle or two).  There are great perogies and cabbage rolls, sausages and sauerkraut, herring and borsct and many other treats to enjoy!  A close jaunt away is the Shrine Lookout, where visitors can admire the huge hills and vast lakes, partly what brought the first Polish people to the area and a reason why many of the first settlers never left.  If you ever get the chance to stop by, Wilno is very welcoming and there will be something there to catch your fancy!
